Work First New Jersey (WFNJ): The WFNJ transportation program is a program based on the MCBETS program. Service is available in all areas of the county and is provided to WFNJ participants and to former welfare recipients to access competitive employment opportunities through a combination of feeder service to existing bus and rail or direct group or shared ride opportunities. The cost of this service is $2.00 each way plus the cost of public transportation.
Monmouth County Division of Transportation has taken a cost sharing approach to establishing fares. The fare structure for the various program sis based on the cost for the service with reduced fare opportunities available for extremely low income individuals. In the case of the WFNJ and MCBETS program, which was designed as a transitioning program, customers pay a higher percentage of the cost of the trip the longer they use it. This structure is based on the concept that the longer one is employed, the more income they have and the greater their ability to pay the full fare. This structure allows the rider to continue to use the service as a back-up plan, burdening the transportation system’s funding or service.
