County to combat West Nile Virus
Mosquito Control Division will spray in Spring Lake on Sept. 14

SPRING LAKE, NJ – Monmouth County Mosquito Control Division will be conducting a mosquito operation on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 4:30 – 6 a.m. due to evidence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the area.

The Monmouth County Mosquito Control Division will administer treatment between the railroad tracks and Ocean Ave. from Monmouth Ave. south to Shore Rd. and Brown Ave. The County will be spraying “Duet Dual-Action” which contains two pesticides called Prallethrin and Sumithrin, and a synergistic compound called piperonyl butoxide which increases the effectiveness of the pesticides. The County will be using truck-mounted, ultra-low-volume equipment that applies the pesticide at a fraction of an ounce per acre.

“The County Mosquito Control Division is determined to control flying adult mosquitoes and to limit the spread of mosquito-borne illness,” said Commissioner Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley. “We encourage residents to help control the mosquito population by eliminating sources where they can breed, such as removing any standing water around the home by emptying buckets of water and turning them over and drilling drainage holes in garbage and recycling cans.”

Pyrethroids have been recommended for Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) mosquito control in New Jersey by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) current evaluation considers pyrethroid-containing products to be slightly toxic with minimal potential risk to people when used properly as part of an integrated mosquito control program.

“We recommend our residents protect themselves from mosquito and mosquito-born illnesses by using EPA registered repellents, wearing long sleeves and long pants and limiting outdoor activities at dusk, when possible, “said Deputy Director Kiley.
