CorrectionsThe Monmouth County Correctional Institution is a nationally accredited, maximum-security facility with an occupancy rating of 1,328 beds. The Correctional facility consists of independent housing units or pods where Correctional Officers provide direct supervision over 64 similarly classified inmates.

The Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) is one of the largest facilities of its kind in New Jersey and among the top ten largest county correctional institutions in the nation. MCCI has an occupancy rating of 1,328 inmates, including state and out-of-state inmates. Designed in a modular, or "pod" layout, Corrections Officers can quickly move to restore order or keep an eye on potential trouble. Because of its design, prisoners who repeatedly break rules or have confrontations with other prisoners can be easily transferred to another "pod" to assure that order is kept. Long, well-lit, well-guarded halls separate the pods.

Pods are open environments where prisoners are not locked down for 23 hours a day unless their behavior warrants it. Each pod has a common area with game tables, benches and chairs. An attached and enclosed outdoor recreation area permits inmates to exercise and have some fresh air. A large glass wall lets corrections officers supervise every prisoner at all times. In addition, there is a private conference area for meetings with lawyers and corrections staff.

The prison houses every sort of alleged law-breaker, from murderer to "deadbeat" parent to those awaiting trial. The state Department of Corrections houses some inmates here to await a bed in a state prison. Prisoners sentenced to jail by a county court are typically incarcerated here for up to one year. However, the state also contracts to house prisoners at MCCI for longer periods.

The Sheriff's Office's Department of Corrections also makes effective use of house arrest through the use of electronically monitored wristlets that continuously monitor a prisoner's location. Wristlets are used on inmates who have been convicted of minor crimes but would benefit society and themselves more by being permitted to work or attend school. The wristlets permit officers to track the wearer's at all times, and have been instrumental in effecting arrests of wearers who violate their limitations.
