The Commission staff has been cross-trained in
bio-remediation of wetland sites. We will continue to work with the staff of the Freehold
Soil Conservation District (FSCD) and the staff of the National Resource Conservation
Service (NRCS) on projects that restore stream corridors and enhance degraded wetlands.
The Commission has obtained a major stream clearing and dredging permit from the United States Army Corps of Engineers for 33 waterways in Monmouth County. The Commission must file brief preliminary plans with the Corps prior to each job that they undertake. The Commission 404 permit allowing these activities was issued in September 1990 and expired in September 1993 but was renewable for an additional seven year period. In 1994, after considerable correspondence and site visits with Corps personnel, a modification and extension were issued with an expiration date of September 13, 2001.
In 1998 the Commission, with the assistance of the Office of Mosquito Control Coordination, applied for and received a County-wide permit for de-snagging and de-silting stormwater management facilities (SWMF's) and drainage ditches. This permit will enable the staff to remove and resolve problems related to mosquito breeding habitat.
