Larval Surveillance

Surveillance is the key component in all IPM based activities. The full time inspection staff receives ongoing training from the Assistant Superintendent on the methodology of proper surveillance technology and identification of potential mosquito breeding habitat. Larval surveys represent the most frequently used tool for determining the prevalence of mosquitoes in any habitat.

Inspectors are taught proper dipping methods and in turn pass that information on to seasonal personnel. Larval samples are taken and identified on site or returned to the laboratory for identification. After proper identification, a determination is made as to the most appropriate method of remediation. This hopefully can be accomplished using source reduction techniques. However, applications of registered larvicides are most frequently used to treat the area.

The Monmouth County Mosquito Commission maintains larval breeding records on our computer system. We started the program in 1987 and are currently in the process of revising the record keeping system.

The Pilot-Inspector maintains records of all aerial larviciding activity. He will continue to evaluate mosquito habitat from the air. When sites that are known to be conducive to breeding are located, he will land and sample, and when determined to be necessary, he will apply the appropriate larvicide at rates recommended on the manufacturer's label and registered with USEPA and NJDEP. Since larval control still remains a significant part of our mosquito control program the Pilot-Inspector will continue to expand the use of GIS technology in mapping and locating new potential breeding locations.
