There are fifty-three municipal governments in Monmouth County. There are two cities, Long Branch and Asbury Park, fifteen townships, thirty-five boroughs and one village. The most populated municipality is Middletown Township with approximately 71,000 residents. The least populated is the Village of Loch Arbour with a population of 377. Two thirds of the people live within a five-mile corridor along the Bayshore coastline and the Atlantic Ocean coastline.
None of the municipalities operate their own mosquito control program. Ten local health departments service the residents of these municipalities. The Monmouth County Mosquito Commission will continue to maintain a close working relationship with each of the departments.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS
Based upon 1994 statistics there are 280,000 0f
approximately 300,000 Monmouth County residents, who are employed. The unemployment rate
was 5.8%. Using these current economic indicators the unemployment rate has fallen below
4.7%.
Monmouth County has changed significantly over the last century. In the early twentieth century much of the housing in the County was constructed and used as summer homes. Organized mosquito control was at least partially responsible for much of the waterfront areas of the County becoming valuable property. The grid ditching WPA projects of the 1930's resulted in the Raritan Bayshore area becoming habitable.
Statistics derived from the 1990 census show the median family income for Monmouth County was $53,950. The median household income was $45,912 and the median per capita income was $20,565. Using comparable statistics statewide, Monmouth County is one of the more affluent counties in the state.
Based upon these socio-economic factors the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders believes that it is essential to maintain a quality of life for County residents and visitors that stresses the ability to enjoy the natural environment. To that end they have been extremely supportive of the Monmouth County Mosquito Extermination Commission and fully support our mission.
