Adult Surveillance

The Commission operates between 18 and 25 New Jersey Light Traps to capture adult mosquitoes. The number of traps in use varies each season. The data gathered from these traps are used to determine the incidence of various species of mosquitoes in a known habitat. Based on many years of collections, these data yield significant information to assist the Commission staff in fulfilling its mission. Aditional light traps are added or moved as needed.

In addition to the use of the NJ light trap, the Commission staff also uses CO2 baited CDC light traps and gravid traps for determining the incidence of disease vectors in an area.

The Commission staff works cooperatively with the State NJ Mosquito-borne Disease Surveillance Program to monitor West Nile virus activity in the county. Of the 65 species of mosquitoes located in New Jersey, 33 have been collected in Monmouth County.

The Commission employs a full time Entomologist, whose responsibilities include surveillance and identification of adult mosquitoes. The Entomologist was responsible for identifying Aedes albopictus (The Asian Tiger Mosquito) from a light trap located in Keyport, NJ. This was the first finding of this mosquito species in New Jersey.

The Commission maintains records of all surveillance activities.
