Freeholders honor public safety telecommunicators
‘Public Safety Telecommunications Week’ in Monmouth County

FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognized the importance of public safety telecommunications personnel and declared the week of April 10 as “Public Safety Telecommunications Week” in Monmouth County.

The “Public Safety Telecommunications Week” proclamation was presented at the Board’s workshop meeting on April 14 to Sharon Princing, and James Clanton, who represented the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Communications Division.

“The first and most critical part in responding to emergencies is when a call is placed to 9-1-1 telecommunicators,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the Sherriff’s Office. “The experience and swift action by this staff is invaluable in saving lives, preventing tragedies and treating those who suffer injuries. The people who staff the call center know too well that emergencies occur at any time and require the swift dispatch of police, fire or emergency medical services. Their ability to obtain important information regarding an incident is a testimony to their professionalism, compassion and poise under pressure.”

In 2015, the Monmouth County Communications Center received a total of 607,949 calls, an average of 1,660 calls per day. All staffers are trained as Emergency Medical Dispatchers, Emergency Communication officers, and National Crime Information Center terminal operators.

"This week is a great opportunity to say thank you to all the public safety telecommunicators for their hard work and commitment in maintaining public safety," said Sheriff Shaun Golden. "These dedicated men and women play a critical role in saving lives, and all too often that work goes unnoticed."

In 1991, Congress proclaimed the second week in April as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. This year, Public Safety Telecommunications Week will be observed from April 10 through April 16 in Monmouth County.
