Health Department to offer cancer screenings
Cancer screenings and mammogram clinics offered through December
FREEHOLD, NJ – Preventative care is essential to maintaining good health. To promote preventative measures, the Monmouth County Health Department (MCHD) is offering several cancer screening and mammogram clinics from March through December at their office located at 3435 Highway 9.
Clinics will also be offered at the MCHD Regional Office Facility at 227 Hamilton Ave. in Neptune.
“All women are at risk for getting breast cancer, and that risk increases as they get older,” said Freeholder John P. Curley, liaison to the Health Department. “Early detection is key in treating cancer, which is why I am pleased that the County is making breast and cervical cancer screenings and other medical outreach available to all women.”
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer (other than skin cancer) in women and ranks second among cancer deaths in women. The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age, but it is more treatable when found in its early stages. Health care providers recommend that women age 40 and over should have a mammogram and a clinical breast exam every year.
Cancer screening clinics include a Pap test, breast examination, blood pressure check and self-breast check instructions. Cancer screening clinic participants must be at least 21 years of age.
Cancer screenings will be held on the following Thursdays from 1:30 to 3 p.m.:
- Freehold: March 19, April 16, May 7, June 25, July 23, Aug. 20, Sept. 24, Oct. 22, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17
- Neptune: March 26, April 23, May 21, June 18, July 16, Aug. 6, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, Nov. 5 and Dec. 3
Mammogram screenings are being provided by Multi-Diagnostic Services. Participants must be at least 35 years of age.
Mammogram screenings will be held on the following Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.:
- Freehold: April 2, July 30 and Oct. 15
- Neptune: May 14, Sept. 3 and Dec. 10
There is no charge for residents of participating towns or women who qualify with no insurance. For County residents from non-participating towns, there is a co-pay of $20 for the cancer screening and $45 for the mammogram screening. Appointments are required.
