Kozloski Road work scheduled for Wednesday

Rumble strip to be installed in center of road

FREEHOLD, NJ – On Wednesday, Oct. 29, Monmouth County will install a rumble strip between the north and southbound lanes of Kozloski Road from Center Street to Turf Drive.

Motorists in the area should expect travel delays on Kozloski Road from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Weather permitting, the project is expected to take one day to complete.

“This one-day project will put in place a road safety feature to alert drivers if they drift from their lane,” said Freeholder Thomas A. Arnone. “This will be a milled, 4,300-foot long rumble strip over the business section of State Highway 33.”

A rumble strip causes tactile vibrations and an audible rumble through the wheels into a vehicle’s interior. It is a proven safety measure to reduce cross over accidents.

Fatal accidents on Aug. 19 and Sept. 27 occurred when one vehicle crossed over into an oncoming lane of traffic on Kozloski Road.

While the cause of both accidents remains under investigation, the County’s Division of Engineering is continuing to work with Freehold Township and NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to identify both short-term and long-term safety improvements along Kozloski Road.

On Oct. 9, the Monmouth County Engineer met with the NJDOT Commissioner Jamie Fox and Assemblywoman Caroline Cassagrande to discuss possible safety improvements on the road.

Earlier this month, the County conducted traffic studies along the corridor. A traffic volume study was conducted from Oct. 3-10 and a speed study was conducted from Oct. 24-27.

Monmouth County and Freehold Township officials are also continuing to educate drivers and enforce the existing speed limit along the 4-mile Kozloski Road corridor from State Highway 33 Bypass to Highway 79.

Previously, the County placed two mobile speed indicators and four variable message boards to alert drivers to their actual speed and warn drivers to “SLOW DOWN” and “OBEY SPEED LIMIT.”

On October 1, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office kicked-off the Countywide Unplugged and Alive campaign. The campaign is a tool for law enforcement officers to bring awareness to distracted driving and the deadly effects is can have on drivers and their families. Distracted driver warning notices have been issued on Kozloski Road in the past several weeks.

Monmouth County has contracted with Zone Striping, Inc. of Glassboro, NJ to install the rumble strip.

The contract amount is $32,360.

Freehold Township Police and Monmouth County Department of Public Works, Division of Highway personnel will be assisting with various traffic control measures on Wednesday.

The section of Kozloski Road that traverses over the State Highway 33 was designed, constructed and paid for by the NJDOT as part of the improvements to the business section of State Highway 33. The NJDOT project elevated Kozloski Road over Business State Route 33, which eliminated an intersection and the need for a traffic signal.
