Pound the Pavement for Pancreatic Cancer

Freeholders support walk to benefit Lustgarten Foundation

NEPTUNE, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders are supporting the inaugural Pound the Pavement for Purple 5K Run/ 2 Mile Walk on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park at 703 Corlies Ave. The purple ribbon symbolizes pancreatic cancer awareness.

The Board of Chosen Freeholders is joining forces with the Neptune Township Committee to raise awareness and funding for pancreatic cancer research.

“This is an exciting fundraising event to support pancreatic cancer research,” said Freeholder Thomas A. Arnone. “Come out and run or walk with your friends and family and help raise awareness of this dreaded disease.”

Pancreatic cancer is currently the deadliest cancer in our nation, responsible for more than 39,000 deaths each year, and is currently rated as the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

In 2014, an estimated 46,420 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States and 39,590 people, 20,170 men and 19,420 women, will die of the disease.

“Currently there is no cure for pancreatic cancer and when symptoms present themselves, it is usually too late for an optimistic prognosis,” said Arnone. “That is why it is so important to increase awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into early detection, causes and effective treatments.”

Proceeds from this Pancreatic Cancer Run/Walk will benefit the Lustgarten Foundation. To date, Lustgarten has provided more than $90 million in pancreatic cancer research support. They also provide in-depth information to patients and their families.

Pre-registration is available online until Oct. 28 and by mail until Oct. 30. You may also register the day of the run/walk beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.
