July is Park & Recreation Month

Freeholders urge residents to visit County parks

FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has proclaimed July as Park & Recreation Month and is encouraging residents to celebrate by visiting the County parks. The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders present a proclamation to Fred J. Rummel, Chairman of the Monmouth County Board of Recreation Commissioners, recognizing July as Park & Recreation Month in Monmouth County. “In Monmouth County, we have 41 park areas for our residents and visitors to explore,” said Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the Park System. “From trails to lakes to farms, there is something for the whole family to enjoy at our parks.”

Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. This July, the Freeholders want to promote the health benefits of parks and recreation.

“Not only are our parks great for leisure, but they are great for helping a family stay fit,” said Freeholder Deputy Director Gary J. Rich, Sr. “Ride a bike around the reservoir, take a canoe out on a lake or walk down one of the many trails and improve your health and wellness while enjoying nature.”

The proclamation was given to Fred J. Rummel, Chairman of the Monmouth County Board of Recreation Commissioners.

The scientific evidence is mounting that parks and recreation are building healthier communities and top health officials in the country – U.S. Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – validate that parks and recreation are a critical solution for our nation’s health epidemic.

“Visiting the County parks benefits both mind and body,” added Burry. “I urge you to take advantage of everything your local County parks have to offer, including the Monmouth County Fair that runs from July 23 through July 27 at the East Freehold Park Showgrounds.”

All parks are open from 8 a.m. to dusk and change seasonally or depending upon special activities in a park. For more information on the Monmouth County parks and activities visit www.monmouthcountyparks.com.
