County offers Household Hazardous Waste Day

Residents invited to dispose of unwanted waste

HAZLET, NJ – Monmouth County will offer a Household Hazardous Waste Spring Disposal Day on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hazlet Public Works Garage on Union Avenue for County residents.

“It is so important to properly dispose of hazardous waste,” said Freeholder Serena DiMaso. “We need to make every effort to keep waste out of our water supply and to extend the life of the landfill.”

Items that are accepted include pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, solvents, thinners, corrosives, cleaners, pool chemicals, oil paints, varnishes, aerosol cans (full or partially full), used motor oil, anti-freeze, gasoline, automotive and ‘button’ batteries and propane BBQ tanks.

Items must be in closed containers with the original labels. The maximum amount accepted from each resident is 200 lbs. of dry material and 20 gallons of liquid, with no container larger than 5 gallons.

Items that are not accepted include latex paint, lab reagents, concrete, electronics, care tires, explosives, radioactive materials and asbestos and unknown and unidentified materials.

This is a resident-only program. Businesses must contract privately for proper disposal.

“A common misconception is that latex paint is a hazardous waste, but it is not,” said DiMaso. “It should be dried out with paint hardener or an absorbent such as cat litter, sawdust or dirt and disposed of with your regular household trash. Be sure to leave the lid off so your trash collector knows the container is dried out.”

Latex paint is still being accepted at the permanent facility in Tinton Falls for disposal.

Year-round disposal service is available at the County’s permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility in Tinton Falls. Appointments are not required. Operating hours are as follows: Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 4 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For more information on hazardous waste disposal call the County Household Hazardous Waste facility at 732-683-8686 ext. 5210 or visit www.visitmonmouth.com.
